Meet your activity leader: Michael
Hello! My name is Michael and I am a Moscowholic. I was born and raised in Moscow. I teach history at school. Moscow is an endless book for me (districts are like volumes, streets are like chapters etc) and I am glad to share my admiration and experience related to unexpected coincidences and beautiful stories that took place in my city.
What to expect
Originally a settlement for foreign merchants and military specialists turned into an alternative city centre and then became a factory cluster.
Pre-Petrine Russia suffered a shortage of specialists. There were no officers, doctors, pharmacists, engineers etc. At the same time, the attitude towards foreigners was suspicious. So they were living in special settlements outside the city (but very close to tsar's summer residence). This settlement was called "Nemetskaya sloboda" (German Quarter). Young tsar Peter I has found here friends and ideas.
We will travel through quarters and epochs. We will look beyond the modern facades. You will learn how to distinguish a nobleman's house from a merchant's house.
True stories about Peter the Great and his hilarious pranks are also included.
